ODE TO THE PAST (with the occasional nod to the present)

Sarah and Daniel, part 2

I am constantly asked who my inspiration is for Sarah Weston (not to mention who would play her in a film version of The Tenth Saint). As I mentioned in the previous post about Daniel Madigan, I do have various photos of people on my mood boards, and these help me flesh out the physical attributes of my characters.

For Sarah, I have a stunning photo of a younger, unmade-up Cate Blanchett, which I love for a few reasons: her fiercely intelligent gaze, her natural beauty, her effortless combination of femininity and strength. I also have photos of Charlize Theron, which serve as inspiration for Sarah's blonde locks and big blue eyes, and the late Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, as a prototype for Sarah's willowy but athletic physique.

Sarah is an aristocratic beauty with a cool exterior and a fire burning within. She is gorgeous in a natural, unadorned way; strong inside and out; streetwise; and almost intimidatingly intelligent and intuitive. She is at home among ancient ruins, in the world's harshest terrain, but also can hold her own among powerful players in the most fast-paced cities.

As for who would play her in a film, I've heard a couple of dozen suggestions to date. I'm partial to Charlize myself. I wonder what she looks like without makeup...
